The Texas Capitol Vietnam Veterans Monument Committee welcomes you to our newly renovated website. As we’ve continued our efforts to raise the funds the build a monument honoring all Vietnam veterans of Texas on the grounds of our Capitol, we realized that we could use this site to extend our efforts to honor our Texas heroes by creating a “Living Monument” where veterans can share and preserve their stories. As Texas native Joe Galloway tells us in the “Texas Remembers” video, thousands of Texans answered the nation’s call to fight, and sometimes die, in Vietnam. We hope our new features will help you see who they were. And if you are one of them, we hope you’ll submit your story and photos as well.
We’ve added several exciting elements to the site, including an Interactive Texas Map and a way for you to Honor Your Texas hero. You can learn about the role the Lone Star State played in the Vietnam War and how the monument itself is designed.
As we continue to raise the necessary funds to honor our Texas heroes, the Texas Historical Commission will match your donation dollar-for-dollar up to $500,000 and if your organization or community would like to help us, we’ve provided some tools to help you hold a local fundraiser.
So come on in and spend some time meeting “the best of Texas.” And while you’re here, be sure to sign up for our newsletter and Like us on Facebook so we can keep you up to date on the Monument’s progress. And check back often – we have more videos and stories coming.

My father was a Vietnam vet. When he returned home, he took his GI Bill money and went to college, majoring in journalism. He was a good husband and a loving father. And, like the people you mentioned that were surveyed, he was one of those who never regretted his service in the war. He did tell one of my sister’s friends that he had a nightmare about the war maybe once a year, but it never really affected him outwardly.
